An electoral reform advocacy group says a B.C. government committee tasked with studying changes to how British Columbians vote has concluded its work, reporting overwhelming support for a proportional representation system.
Fair Vote Canada says the Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform received more than 800 submissions, and 93% of those were in favour of scrapping the current first-past-the-post system.
The committee was originally formed as part of the co-operation accord between the B.C. NDP and the Green Party.
Fair Vote Canada executive director Anita Nickerson says the feedback heard by the committee was clear: British Columbians want to move away from what she calls a “polarized, two-party system.”
