Elections Alberta has officially approved a proposed referendum question regarding whether the province should secede from Canada to become an independent nation. The approval marks a significant procedural step for proponents of the “Wexit” movement, shifting the focus toward a massive public petition campaign.

According to Elections Alberta, the organizers behind the proposal now have until early January to appoint a financial officer. Once this requirement is met, they will be granted a four-month window to collect approximately 178,000 signatures from eligible voters across the province to move the process forward.

The Alberta Prosperity Project, a key advocacy group behind the initiative, hailed the decision as a major victory. The group argues that Alberta’s economic and political interests are no longer aligned with the federal government, specifically citing federal oil and gas policies and a perceived lack of influence in federal elections as primary reasons for seeking independence.

The path to a vote remains legally complex. Previously, a judge ruled a similar referendum question unconstitutional under older provincial regulations. However, organizers believe this new proposal complies with current legal frameworks, though it is expected to face further scrutiny from constitutional experts and federal officials as the signature-gathering phase begins.
