Premier David Eby pledged to expand involuntary care facilities for people with severe mental illness and addictions and announced legislation to advance the North Coast power line project. Speaking at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Victoria, Eby said new facilities in Surrey and Prince George will add about 100 beds as part of efforts to address crime. The announcement follows growing calls from municipal leaders for expanded involuntary care to tackle homelessness and public disorder. While noting crime has dropped 11 per cent across the province, Eby said communities also need to feel safe. He added that B.C. is increasing support for homelessness services and victims of crime, and expressed hope the federal government will introduce significant Criminal Code reforms this fall. Eby also assured civic leaders that the Prince George-to-Terrace power transmission line will bring billions in investment and create jobs in northern and rural communities.
