British Columbia Premier David Eby honoured the courage of children affected by the Tumbler Ridge shootings during a Pink Shirt Day event focused on anti-bullying and community support.

Speaking at the ceremony at the B.C. legislature, Eby said the students endured an “extreme lack of safety” but responded with remarkable bravery, stepping up to protect and support one another during and after the Feb. 10 tragedy that claimed eight lives.

He noted that while few people will ever face such circumstances, everyone has opportunities in everyday life to act with kindness and courage to help keep schools and communities safe.

A moment of silence was observed to remember the victims, with politicians, guests and a school choir in attendance.

Education Minister Lisa Beare said this year’s Pink Shirt Day carries special weight, describing it as a time of profound sorrow. She said the tragedy has deeply affected families and communities across the province.
