The emergency room (ER) at Delta Hospital was forced to temporarily close for over 12 hours this past weekend due to a doctor staffing shortage, marking the fourth such closure this year.

Fraser Health confirmed in a release on October 4 that the disruption lasted from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

The health authority ensured that all patients already in the ER were seen by a physician before shifts ended at 1:30 a.m. During the closure, emergency-trained nurses remained on site to provide basic care for walk-in patients and to redirect or transfer patients to neighbouring hospitals. Fraser Health confirmed that only the emergency department was impacted, with all other hospital services remaining available overnight.

Delta City Councillor Dylan Kruger stated that the closure is yet another example that B.C.’s healthcare system is “broken.”

Kruger expressed his frustration, noting this was the fourth time this year alone that Delta Hospital’s ER had closed due to staffing challenges. “People have an expectation that in a country like Canada, you pay your taxes and you get access to services like emergency room healthcare. That expectation is not being met,” he said.
