Delta Hospital’s emergency room temporarily closed on Monday night due to a sudden doctor shortage, marking the second time this year and third time in recent months the ER has closed. According to a news release from Fraser Health, the “temporary service interruption” was in effect from 7 p.m. Monday until 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning following an unexpected doctor illness. The health authority noted that all patients already in the emergency department would be seen by a doctor before the end of the shift.
After 7 p.m., nurses remained on-site to provide basic care to walk-in patients and to assist in redirecting or transferring those with urgent needs to nearby hospitals. This closure affected only the emergency department at Delta Hospital. This follows a similar service disruption at Mission Memorial Hospital from Sunday evening to Monday morning.
The opposition B.C. Conservatives have criticized the ongoing closures, highlighting that under the current NDP government, there have been 1,407 closures of varying lengths at 20 hospitals over the past two years.
