Coquitlam RCMP is alerting the public to a recent spike in distraction-style jewelry thefts in the community.

Police say two similar incidents were reported in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam in which victims were approached by a group of suspects who struck up a conversation and then stole their jewelry.

In one case, a resident doing yard work was approached by a group offering a necklace and ring. While pretending to place the necklace on the victim, a suspect removed the victim’s own necklace.

In the second incident, a pedestrian was asked for directions by people in a vehicle. As the victim came closer, one suspect grabbed their arm to distract them while another swapped their genuine gold necklace for a fake one.

RCMP describe the suspects as typically driving out-of-province, often rented, vehicles; behaving in an overly friendly manner; travelling with family members, including children; and offering low-priced gold or jewelry while sharing emotionally charged stories to earn sympathy. They also tend to invade personal space by placing jewelry on victims instead of handing it over.

Police are urging residents to be cautious: avoid letting strangers touch you, stay alert during everyday activities, refuse any unwanted contact, walk away from suspicious encounters and report incidents immediately.

“These suspects rely on distraction and prey on victims’ compassion to commit their crimes,” said Acting Sgt. George Han of Coquitlam RCMP. “If something feels off, trust your instincts and keep your distance.”

Coquitlam RCMP is encouraging anyone who has been targeted by fraud or theft to report it to police.
