Surrey Police Service (SPS) is investigating a “targeted” overnight fire in Surrey’s Newton neighborhood that damaged a home and two vehicles, displacing several residents. Police officers had rescued two elderly residents from the burning house.

At around 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, SPS Frontline officers responded to a resident’s report of a house fire in the 13400 block of 64 Avenue. Officers quickly arrived to find two vehicles and the front of the house ablaze, with active explosions occurring. While basement suite residents safely evacuated, officers learned about two residents upstairs.

SPS said that despite flames rapidly engulfing the back of the house and smoke filling the interior, officers managed to crawl through a small opening in a broken glass door. “They searched the upper floor and located two elderly residents. One resident was escorted out the back, while the other had to be carried out by both officers. As the second officer went back inside to search for more residents, Surrey Fire Service firefighters arrived and entered through the front,” SPS added.

Police successfully evacuated a total of eight people from the residence. All received treatment on scene from BCEHS for smoke inhalation, and no one is believed to have suffered any injuries.

SPS and Surrey Fire Service arson investigators returned in the morning to continue determining the cause of the fire. At this early stage, investigators believe the fire is suspicious and targeted. Two male suspects were seen near the vehicles at the front of the residence around 1:38 a.m., when the fire is thought to have started. Two dark-colored sedans were then seen driving southbound on 134A Street.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the fire or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage and were in the area of the 13400 block 64 Avenue at approximately 1:30 am on June 11, 2025, to contact Surrey Police Services non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file 25-47853 (SP) or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
