Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced that his party plans to introduce a bill this fall aimed at making it more difficult for individuals accused of certain crimes to get bail.
Poilievre stated that the proposal would create a new category of major offenses, including sexual assault, kidnapping, human trafficking, home invasion, and firearms charges. Under the proposed bill, a “reverse onus” would be placed on those accused of these crimes, requiring them to prove they should be released on bail.
The push for stricter bail laws has been gaining momentum in recent months, with premiers, police associations, and the federal Tories all calling for reform. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that the government will introduce its own bail reform bill during the fall parliamentary session, which begins on Monday. During the federal election campaign, Carney promised to toughen bail laws for those accused of home invasion, car theft, and violent and organized crime.
