Conservative Leader and Leader of the Opposition, Pierre Poilievre, has accused Prime Minister Mark Carney of failing to protect Canada’s auto workers.
The statement claims that during the last election, Mark Carney promised to “negotiate a win, ‘handle’ Donald Trump, and secure a deal with the United States by July 21st,” but “he has done the exact opposite.” Poilievre asserts that “Wherever Carney goes, higher tariffs follow, and Canadians pay the price.”
According to the statement, “Last night, over 3,000 Stellantis employees in Brampton received the news that the company is shifting Jeep production to Illinois, and investing $13 billion in American factories and American workers.” The Conservatives pointed fingers at the Liberals, stating that the government provided Stellantis up to $10 billion in taxpayer subsidies for an EV plant in Ontario, yet “failed to secure any job protection guarantees for its employees.”
Responding to Mark Carney’s comment that auto workers should wait until CUSMA is renegotiated, the Conservatives retorted, “After failing to deliver on the promise he made three months ago, auto workers cannot wait any longer.” The statement highlighted the workers’ immediate concerns, including mortgages, putting food on the table, and paying their children’s winter hockey fees.
