Alberta Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux has announced his resignation from Parliament, confirming the decision in a statement released Thursday.
He did not explain the reasons for his resignation but said he hopes “to have the opportunity to address the House one final time in the future.”
The announcement comes just a day after Jeneroux denied rumours that he was planning to cross the floor to join the Liberals.
Jeneroux is the second Conservative MP to leave the party in two days, following Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont, who crossed over to the Liberals on Tuesday.
First elected in 2015, Jeneroux has represented the Alberta riding of Edmonton Riverbend since then.
“I hope to have the chance to address the House one last time in the future,” Jeneroux said. “For now, my full attention needs to be on my family and the responsibilities that come with that.”
The Edmonton-area MP expressed his “deep gratitude” to those who have reached out to him in recent days and asked that people “please refrain from contacting my family during this time.”
Jeneroux added that he entered the last election “hopeful that Canadians would place their trust in a team led by Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives.” He said he “was eager to help realize that vision,” but acknowledged that “the outcome was not what [he] had expected.”
