In a pointed interview with RED FM, Conservative MP Jasraj Singh Hallan, who represents Calgary Forest Lawn (formerly Calgary East), voiced strong criticism of the Liberal government’s approach to public safety, crime, and economic management. The interview focused on what Hallan described as a growing crisis in community safety across the country.

Rise in Crime Rates Tied to Liberal Legislation : MP Hallan expressed deep concern over what he sees as an alarming rise in violent crime throughout Canada. Citing recent statistics, he pointed to a 55% increase in violent crime, a 103% rise in gun-related offenses, and a 330% surge in extortion cases. He attributed these spikes to federal legislation specifically Bills C-5 and C-75, passed under the Liberal government which he claims have weakened the justice system.“These laws have eliminated mandatory minimum sentences and made it easier for violent offenders to be released on bail, said Hallan. Canadians no longer feel safe in their own neighbourhoods.

Gun Buyback Program Under Fire : Hallan also targeted the government’s controversial gun buyback program, calling it a “waste of taxpayer dollars” that unfairly punishes legal gun owners while doing little to address crime involving illegal firearms. “Most guns used in crime are smuggled illegally across the border, not from legal gun owners,” Hallan argued. He further cited a leaked audio recording allegedly featuring Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, in which the minister is purported to admit the program was launched for political gain. If the minister truly said that, he has no business holding that position,” Hallan said, calling for the minister’s removal.

Conservative Security Strategy : Outlining the Conservative Party’s alternative approach, Hallan said a Conservative government would repeal Bills C-5 and C-75 to ensure repeat violent offenders stay behind bars. He also promised to bolster border security, hire additional RCMP officers, and invest in advanced scanning technology at ports to curb the smuggling of illegal weapons and drugs.

Addressing the Economy and Cost of Living : The Calgary MP did not limit his criticism to public safety. He highlighted the soaring cost of living, rising unemployment, and skyrocketing housing prices as additional failures of the current government. Canadians are being squeezed from all sides. A Conservative government would restore fiscal responsibility, reduce inflationary spending, and create real job opportunities,” he said.

Drug Policy: A Call for Rehabilitation Over Supply
On the subject of drug policy, Hallan challenged the Liberals’ harm-reduction model, which includes safe supply initiatives. He argued that simply providing drugs to addicts is not a solution. We need to focus on recovery and rehabilitation, not just maintaining addiction,” he said, emphasizing the need for more treatment facilities and long-term care options for those struggling with substance abuse.
