Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont was welcomed with cheers and open arms on Parliament Hill Wednesday morning after he crossed the floor to join the Liberal caucus. This move significantly boosts the standing of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s minority government, bringing it just two seats shy of a majority.
Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly welcomed d’Entremont, thanking him for his decision to represent his Acadie-Annapolis, N.S. riding as a Liberal.
“I’m honoured to welcome him as the newest member of our government caucus,” Carney said during an announcement at an Ottawa public transit facility the morning after tabling his first federal budget.
D’Entremont was present at the event, where he touted the new $51-billion “Build Communities Strong Fund” announced in the budget. Carney emphasized the importance of the timing of the floor crossing. “Chris’ decision to join the government caucus at this crucial moment for our country is exceptionally valuable and important,” he said.
Facing questions about whether he had actively sought to lure opposition MPs or if more floor crossings were imminent, Carney avoided specifics but framed d’Entremont’s move as a message to all Members of Parliament.
“Wherever they’re sitting in the House, this is a time where we need to act as a country, be as unified as possible, to act boldly, and to invest in the future of Canada,” Carney stated. “That’s what this budget does.” The support of d’Entremont helps pave the way for the government to secure the votes needed to pass its budget.
