Burnaby RCMP, along with several partner agencies, carried out a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement operation in response to numerous complaints about overweight dump trucks operating in the area of Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue.
Over the past six months, multiple agencies received reports concerning dump trucks traveling to the Port of Vancouver and eastbound locations throughout the Lower Mainland via Highway 1. The complaints focused on trucks exceeding legal weight limits and posing safety risks to other road users.
On Monday, June 16, 2025, Burnaby RCMP, BC Highway Patrol, Vancouver Police Commercial Vehicle Unit (CVU), Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE), and WorkSafeBC launched a large-scale enforcement operation in the affected area.
Enforcement Operation Results:
- 11 commercial vehicle inspections conducted
- 9 trucks were found to be overweight
- 8 trucks were taken out of service
- 31 total violations identified
- 19 tickets issued
- WorkSafeBC inspected 9 trucks and issued stop-work orders for 6 of them
Each overweight truck was escorted back to its excavation site and ordered off the road until it complied with weight regulations.
In addition to weight violations, several trucks were found carrying unsecured loads, including loose rocks that posed a hazard by potentially falling onto roadways. One inspection also uncovered a tire with an 8-inch gash, raising further safety concerns.
