A commercial food processing company has been ordered to pay $330,000 after a worker died from being trapped in a smokehouse in Edmonton.

On Thursday, a judge directed Ontario-based Sofina Foods Inc. to allocate the funds toward a workplace training program. The court acknowledged mitigating factors, including the company’s efforts to support the victim’s family by covering their mortgage and continuing their health and dental benefits.

In total, the company spent $500,000 in assistance, the court heard.

The ruling came a day after Sofina pleaded guilty to one count of violating workplace safety regulations. The remaining 25 charges against the company were withdrawn.

The charges stem from the death of 32-year-old Samir Subedi in March 2023. Subedi had entered the gas-fired smokehouse to check its temperature after it had been loaded with meat the night before. Due to faulty door safety mechanisms, he became trapped inside as temperatures rose to 92°C. He died from heat exposure.
