Surrey city hall has updated its communication strategies to reflect the city’s evolving demographics, with nearly 70% of residents identifying as visible minorities and over 40% speaking a language other than English at home.
According to a report by Joey Brar, Surrey’s General Manager of Corporate Services, the city’s policy now allows for translation of city messages into languages spoken at home by at least 5% of Surrey’s population—either city-wide or within specific town centres.
For instance, Punjabi is spoken at home by 18% of Surrey residents. “To date, the City has issued 100 media statements and releases in Punjabi,” Brar stated.
He also noted that over the past year, Surrey has made significant progress in expanding multilingual communications. “These efforts have improved access to city services and information, while also fostering greater trust and a stronger sense of community belonging,” he added.
