Surrey mayor Brenda Locke ha issued a statement today, saying that the City of Surrey is facing a serious crisis, as residents and business owners continue to experience the real impacts of extortion, violence, and organized crime.

The City strongly supports the federal government’s efforts to enhance public safety through targeted Criminal Code, bail, and sentencing reforms, along with stronger enforcement measures. In particular, Surrey backs Government of Canada Bill C-12, which focuses on border security and immigration system integrity, and Bill C-14, which addresses bail and sentencing reform. These measures would close a major legal gap by preventing individuals charged with extortion or related offences from claiming asylum.

Such reforms are urgently needed to give law enforcement modern and effective tools to disrupt criminal networks, secure the border, and ensure repeat and violent offenders face meaningful consequences.

This is a time for bipartisan leadership. The federal government has introduced strong measures that Parliament should advance without delay. All MPs must prioritize public safety and work together to expedite these reforms, or communities will remain vulnerable and lives will continue to be at risk.
