Chrystia Freeland has been appointed as Canada’s new special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine, a new role she will take on after resigning from her position as transport minister.
In an online statement released Tuesday, Freeland announced her resignation from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet and confirmed she will not be seeking re-election.
“With tremendous gratitude and a little sadness, I have decided to step down from Cabinet today and turn the page on this chapter in my life. I do not intend to run in the next federal election,” Freeland wrote. “I am forever grateful to my constituents for trusting me and electing me five times, and I would like to thank Prime Minister Carney and Prime Minister Trudeau for the privilege of serving in their cabinets over the past decade.”
Earlier in the day, media reports had already suggested Freeland would be taking on a new role related to Ukraine. Freeland, however, did not comment when approached by reporters before a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning.
While she has stepped down from her cabinet post, Freeland will continue to serve as a sitting Member of Parliament.
