The man accused of stabbing three people at a Vancouver Chinatown festival two years ago says he was mentally and “morally” unwell at the time of the attack.
Blair Donnelly made the comments on the third day of his trial in Vancouver for aggravated assault, exactly two years after the incident at the Light Up Chinatown festival, in which he admits to stabbing three individuals.
Donnelly testified that he was driven by thoughts of harming others after believing God had instructed him to do so when he was allowed out of the B.C. Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam for a bike ride on the day of the attack.
Having pleaded not guilty, Donnelly has been questioned by Crown prosecutor Mark Myhre about whether he understood the consequences depending on whether he was found not criminally responsible.
Donnelly told the court that one outcome could result in jail, while another could see him returned to the hospital. When asked by Myhre which he would prefer, Donnelly replied that he wants to go where “God wants me to go.”
