China to suspend some tariffs on Canadian farm and seafood products after Carney visit

China announced Friday it will temporarily lift several tariffs on Canadian agricultural and seafood imports that were introduced during a trade dispute with Ottawa, following an initial agreement reached with Prime Minister Mark Carney during his January visit.

In a statement, China’s finance ministry said it will suspend its 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian canola meal and peas, and pause 25 per cent duties on lobster and crab imports from March 1 through the end of 2026.

The move largely matches Carney’s expectations. However, the announcement did not address tariffs on canola seed — a key issue Ottawa had hoped would be resolved by March 1.

Canada had anticipated Beijing would cut canola seed tariffs to a combined rate of about 15 per cent, down from the current 84 per cent. China’s commerce ministry has said its investigation into Canadian canola is scheduled to conclude on March 9.

The statement also made no reference to canola oil or pork. Still, additional tariff adjustments could be unveiled before the March 1 timeline outlined by Carney.
