York Regional Police say a man in his 70s has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous operation causing bodily harm after crashing an SUV into a Richmond Hill daycare, killing a toddler and injuring several others.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Roots Early Education Academy, near Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive. Police found 10 people hurt, including seven children and three staff members, after the vehicle plowed through the front of the daycare. A one-and-a-half-year-old boy was later pronounced dead.

By Thursday morning, police confirmed one child remains in critical condition, while five other injured children—aged between one-and-a-half and three—suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Three staff members were also hurt.

Const. Kevin Nebrija said the SUV was in the parking lot when, for unknown reasons, it drove through the building, passing through more than one room. Investigators do not believe the crash was intentional.

Meanwhile, a source told CTV News that Ontario’s education minister is considering new safety measures for childcare centres following the tragedy.
