A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with a shooting at a South Surrey mansion that has been hit twice by gunfire linked to extortion, the B.C. Extortion Task Force announced Monday.
Avtar Singh faces one count of unlawfully discharging a firearm related to the Nov. 12 incident, during which shots were fired at a home in the 17000 block of 32 Avenue.
RCMP said the case involves “one primary victim and several related incidents,” and while one suspect has now been charged, the broader investigation continues.
The same house was also shot at on Nov. 8, when a worker was injured by flying glass.
Singh was arrested Friday and is scheduled to appear in court next on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
“The B.C. Extortion Task Force has been working diligently to advance investigations and secure charges,” said B.C. RCMP Assistant Commissioner John Brewer. “This charge approval is a major step forward, but our work is far from over. Using evidence-based investigations and intelligence-led operations, we remain committed to identifying and prosecuting those involved in violent extortion crimes.”
The RCMP formed the Extortion Task Force in September in response to a surge of attacks targeting South Asian–owned homes and businesses—primarily in Surrey. According to Surrey Police Service, more than 100 extortion-related incidents have been reported this year, including over 40 shootings.
The Canada Border Services Agency is also investigating 96 foreign nationals who “may be inadmissible” due to their alleged involvement in extortion cases, and has already removed five individuals from Canada.
