The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is urging consumers who purchased pistachio nuts from a Metro Vancouver market to return them or dispose of them due to possible salmonella contamination.

The recall involves shelled pistachio kernels sold at Kourosh Foods Market, located at 1860 Lonsdale Avenue in North Vancouver.

According to the CFIA notice, the affected products were sold in various sizes and have a product code beginning with 200422.

Anyone who has become ill after eating the recalled pistachios is advised to contact a healthcare professional.

The CFIA warns: “Do not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute recalled products. Recalled products should be discarded or returned to the store where they were purchased.”

The recall was initiated following test results from the agency. So far, no illnesses have been linked to the specific product from Kourosh Foods Market.

Meanwhile, the Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating a wider outbreak of salmonella infections connected to pistachios across the country. The agency reports 105 illnesses, including 16 hospitalizations, linked to various brands and pistachio-containing products. Most cases have occurred in Quebec and Ontario, with six reported in British Columbia.

The CFIA notes that its investigation at Kourosh Foods Market could lead to additional recalls.

The agency also reminds consumers that food contaminated with salmonella may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause illness. Vulnerable groups—such as young children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems—face the greatest risk of serious or potentially fatal infections.

For healthy individuals, salmonella infection can cause fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, and in some cases, long-term complications like severe arthritis may occur.
