The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) monitors goods entering the country, with extra attention given to shipments that could threaten the safety and security of Canadians. On February 5, 2026, during one of these inspections, CBSA border services officers at the Kingsgate port of entry stopped a commercial truck returning to Canada from California carrying alcohol products.
During a secondary inspection, and with assistance from a CBSA Detector Dog Team, officers discovered and seized 80 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside the truck’s trailer.
The driver was arrested and later handed over to the RCMP Federal Policing Pacific Region’s Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET). The investigation is ongoing.
In 2025, CBSA officers in the Pacific Region carried out 11,390 illegal narcotics seizures, including 728 kilograms of cocaine. Smuggling and other violations under the Customs Act and Criminal Code can result in arrest, criminal charges and prosecution.
That same year, CBSA Detector Dog Service Teams conducted 29,486 searches, identifying 13,986 high-risk food, plant and animal items, along with 34,810 seizures involving drugs, firearms and currency.
The federal government has also committed $1.3 billion to strengthen border security and Canada’s immigration system.
Anyone with information about suspicious cross-border activity is asked to contact the CBSA Border Watch Line at 1-888-502-9060, or report criminal activity to local police, the RCMP at 1-800-387-0020, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
