A recent survey indicates that employees at the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) do not view their workplaces favorably.

According to the 2024 Public Service Employee Survey, only 46% of CBSA employees rated their department as “a great place to work,” one of the lowest rates recorded. Similarly, only 48% of CSIS employees would recommend their workplace. This is in contrast to the overall average, where 67% of government employees gave a positive rating to their departments.

Mark Weber, the national president of the Customs and Immigration Union, said he wasn’t surprised by the results, noting that the CBSA is typically among the lowest-ranked agencies. He added that the agency is known for being very strict on discipline and spends thousands of dollars fighting grievances rather than settling them.

In contrast, the RCMP External Review Committee and the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada received a perfect score, with 100% of their employees rating their departments as a great place to work.

The survey, which ran from October 28 to December 31, 2024, included responses from over 186,000 employees across 93 federal departments.
