Prime Minister Mark Carney is forging a new strategic partnership with Poland, aiming to strengthen Canada’s trade, defense, and energy ties with the fast-growing European economy.
Carney was in Warsaw on Monday, where he met with his Polish counterpart, Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The two leaders agreed to work more closely in key areas such as defense, aviation, cybersecurity, and clean energy. Carney stated that the partnership will boost European demand for Canadian exports and solidify Canada’s defense presence in Europe. The Prime Minister’s office also announced that Canada will be the lead country at a major defence industry expo in Poland next year. Carney is also scheduled to meet with Poland’s newly elected president before heading to Germany.
This visit follows an unannounced stop in Ukraine on Sunday, where Carney attended the country’s modern independence ceremonies in Old Kyiv. After meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Carney did not rule out the possibility of sending Canadian troops to Ukraine as part of a potential security guarantee against Russia. During his visit, he also announced a $2 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which will include drones, armored vehicles, and other munitions.
