Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that his recent response to a question about the status of trade talks with the United States — “Who cares?” — was “a poor choice of words.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre attacked the prime minister over the remark during question period in the House of Commons.
“Before the election, he promised to fight hard. After the election, it’s ‘Who cares?’ Before the election, he called the tariffs an ‘existential crisis.’ Now he says they’re not an urgent concern,” Poilievre said.
“Why is the prime minister so different after the election than he was before it?”
Carney backed away from the comments he made over the weekend.
“On election night, I made a commitment to Canadians: when I make a mistake, I’ll acknowledge it. That was a poor choice of words about a serious issue,” Carney said in question period.
He added that the federal government will announce additional support later this week for industries affected by the tariffs.
When asked on Sunday at the G20 summit in Johannesburg when he last spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump, Carney responded, “Who cares?” and said he doesn’t currently have any “urgent issues” to raise with Trump.
Trump abruptly halted trade negotiations with Canada last month after an Ontario government advertisement used an audio clip of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan speaking against tariffs.
Carney later apologized to Trump for the ad, but the trade talks remain on hold.
The prime minister is also considering a trip to Washington next week for a FIFA World Cup event.
