A man accused of a carjacking in Richmond last December has been charged with robbery after allegedly leading police on a chase that ended across the U.S. border.

Richmond RCMP announced on Tuesday that Shawn Douglas Bergstrom faces one count of robbery in connection with the incident.

The alleged carjacking occurred on December 12, 2024, shortly before 12:40 pm and Richmond RCMP officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress in the 4400 block of No 3 Road. “The complainant told police that a man, later identified as the suspect, approached him, produced a knife, and demanded the keys to his black 2007 Toyota Tacoma. The victim complied, and the suspect drove off southbound on No 3 Road,” police said.

Richmond RCMP frontline officers quickly located the stolen Toyota Tacoma heading southbound on Highway 99, near the George Massey Tunnel. A marked police vehicle attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver failed to pull over. The suspect continued fleeing south on Highway 99, eventually crossing into the United States. Later, U.S. authorities successfully intercepted and arrested the driver.

On June 10, Shawn Douglas Bergstrom was transferred from U.S. custody to Richmond RCMP. He made his first court appearance on June 11 and has been remanded in custody. Bergstrom is scheduled to appear in court again on June 26.
