Operators of a pulp and paper mill in northern British Columbia have been fined nearly $490,000 by the provincial workplace safety regulator after an employee was injured on the job.

WorkSafeBC reported that investigators visited Canfor Pulp Ltd.’s Prince George mill following an incident in which a worker was hurt when an “unguarded cylinder activated on a hydraulic pumping system.”

The inspection found that the company had not installed proper safeguards on the machinery to protect workers, according to the regulator’s online summary.

WorkSafeBC imposed a penalty of $489,104.10, labeling the incident a “high-risk violation.” The agency notes that fines are primarily based on the employer’s total payroll, while also considering the severity of the violation and the company’s history of past infractions.

“The primary purpose of an administrative penalty is to encourage the employer—and others—to comply with occupational health and safety laws and keep workplaces safe,” WorkSafeBC said.

Canfor, which operates three pulp and paper mills and one sawmill in Prince George, did not respond to requests for comment on the incident or the fine.
