Canadians applying for or renewing their Nexus travel cards can no longer choose an “X” gender marker, due to a U.S. executive order issued by President Donald Trump requiring recognition of only male and female genders.
The change came into effect in February 2025.
According to a spokesperson for the Canada Border Services Agency, applicants can still use a Canadian passport with an “X” gender designation, but they must select either “male” or “female” when applying for Nexus.
Existing Nexus cards that already list a gender other than male or female will remain valid.
Nexus memberships, which are valid for five years, are designed to facilitate quicker border crossings between Canada and the U.S.
While the Nexus program is jointly managed by Canada and the U.S., the application process is handled through a U.S. system operated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
