Canada’s unemployment rate climbed to 7.1% in August, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada. This increase comes after the country lost a total of 66,000 jobs for the month.
The report follows a challenging July, where the economy shed 41,000 jobs and the unemployment rate was 6.9%. The August numbers defied expectations from a survey of economists, who had predicted a gain of 10,000 jobs and an unemployment rate of 7%.
Statistics Canada reported that the majority of job losses in August were in part-time work, with a total of 60,000 part-time positions lost. An additional 6,000 full-time jobs were also cut. Employment declined across several industries, including:
Professional, scientific and technical services, which lost 26,000 jobs.
Transportation and warehousing, which saw a drop of 23,000 jobs.
In contrast, the construction sector saw a gain of 17,000 new jobs.
This latest report is released just ahead of the Bank of Canada’s next interest rate decision, scheduled for September 17.
