Canada’s unemployment rate saw a slight dip in June, falling by a tenth of a percentage point to 6.9%, as the economy added approximately 83,000 jobs, according to Statistics Canada.

The agency reported that the majority of these new positions were part-time, with the private sector accounting for 47,000 of the added roles.

These June figures mark a positive shift against the recent slowdown observed in the labor market. Last month’s job gain was the most significant since January and broke a three-month streak of rising unemployment rates.

The wholesale and retail trade industry led the growth with 34,000 new positions, followed by healthcare and social assistance, which added 17,000 jobs. Statistics Canada noted that only the agriculture sector experienced significant job losses, shedding 6,000 positions, while other industries saw minimal change.

Even the manufacturing sector, which has faced job losses in recent months due to Canada’s tariff dispute with the United States, saw a gain of 10,000 positions in June.
