A British Columbia judge has sentenced Canadian combat veteran Brandon Eric Glossop to house arrest and probation for setting fire to a vacant condominium complex in Sidney, B.C., causing nearly $4 million in damage. The judge ruled Glossop’s post-traumatic stress disorder significantly contributed to the crime, and he will not serve jail time.

Glossop pleaded guilty to arson after admitting he poured gasoline throughout the under-construction building in December 2022 and set multiple fires. The blaze triggered the sprinkler system, limiting the flames but causing extensive water damage. He was arrested nearby shortly afterward.

Court heard Glossop, an Afghanistan war veteran who later fought with militias in Syria and Ukraine, has a long history of trauma, substance abuse and mental health struggles. He was diagnosed with PTSD in 2016 and later with alcohol and cocaine-use disorders.

While the Crown sought a prison sentence, the judge cited mitigating factors including Glossop’s PTSD, remorse, guilty plea, youth, and ongoing treatment supported by Veterans Affairs Canada. Victim impact statements described serious financial and emotional harm to condo owners.

Glossop was sentenced to two years less a day of house arrest, followed by two years of probation, with strict conditions including remaining in B.C., abstaining from alcohol and drugs, and being prohibited from possessing weapons or incendiary devices.
