According to Statistics Canada, retail sales in June saw a 1.5% increase, reaching $70.2 billion, boosted by higher spending at food and beverage retailers.
However, the agency noted that its preliminary estimate for July indicates a 0.8% drop in retail sales for that month, though it cautioned that this figure is subject to revision.
Retail sales grew across all nine subsectors tracked by Statistics Canada in June. Notably, sales at food and beverage retailers were up by 2.3%. Sales at clothing, clothing accessories, shoes, jewelry, luggage, and leather goods retailers saw a 5.1% gain in June, while general merchandise retailers experienced a 1.6% rise.
Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline stations, fuel vendors, and motor vehicle and parts dealers, increased by 1.9% in June. In terms of volume, retail sales also rose by 1.5%.
