Canada’s inflation rate accelerated in June, reaching 1.9 percent, up from 1.7 percent in May. Statistics Canada reports that consumers paid more for both new and used vehicles, contributing significantly to the increase.
While gas prices remained largely unchanged in June, last year’s sharper decline in fuel costs pushed the annual comparison higher, impacting overall inflation.
The agency noted that used vehicle prices saw a year-over-year increase in June for the first time in 18 months, a trend attributed to tighter inventories. Canadians also faced higher costs for furniture and other durable goods last month. However, there was some relief from lower inflation on food and shelter costs.
Despite these shifts, the Bank of Canada’s closely watched core inflation metrics showed no signs of easing in June.
