Canada has withdrawn two longstanding legal challenges against U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber.
The U.S. has long accused Canada’s softwood lumber industry of “dumping”—selling subsidized, low-cost lumber to disrupt the U.S. market. Last month, the U.S. Commerce Department announced plans to nearly triple these duties to just over 20 per cent.
The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Canada dropped the appeals earlier this month, which involved two U.S. anti-dumping reviews dating back over a decade.
Dina Destin, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada, said the decision was made after consultations with industry stakeholders and provincial governments, aiming to secure a long-term softwood lumber agreement with the United States. She emphasized that Canada still considers U.S. anti-dumping duties unfair and continues to pursue six other legal challenges on the issue.
