The Canadian government is warning citizens who identify their gender as “X” on their passports that they may face difficulties entering the United States.
Earlier this week, Global Affairs Canada updated its U.S. travel advisory for 2SLGBTQ+ Canadian passport holders, noting that while Canada issues passports with an “X” gender marker, it cannot guarantee entry or transit through other countries. The advisory cautions that travelers may still be required to identify their sex as either male or female when crossing borders.
This warning follows months after former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring the U.S. government to recognize only two sexes—male and female—and to use the term “sex” instead of “gender” on all federal documents. That policy, which also restricts the issuance of U.S. passports recognizing non-binary genders, is currently tied up in the courts.
In January, Canadian officials reported that approximately 3,600 citizens had chosen the “X” gender marker on their passports since the option became available in 2019.
Due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, the American Embassy in Canada declined to comment on the development. Meanwhile, the Canada Border Services Agency announced in August that Canadians applying for new Nexus trusted-traveller cards—or renewing existing ones—would no longer have the option of listing “X” as their gender.
