Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will recognize a Palestinian state in September, provided certain conditions are met by the West Bank’s governing authority.
Carney stated that the Palestinian Authority must hold elections and implement other democratic reforms as part of the conditions for recognition.
The announcement followed a conversation between Carney and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas earlier on Wednesday. It also comes on the heels of similar declarations by other allied nations.
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the U.K. would recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a Gaza ceasefire, permits UN humanitarian aid access, and takes steps toward a lasting peace. France made a similar declaration last week, with President Emmanuel Macron announcing an unconditional plan to recognize Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, stating there is “no alternative” to Palestinian statehood.
In response, several Liberal MPs have urged Canada to follow France’s example. Toronto MP Salma Zahid and Montreal-area MP Sameer Zuberi posted on social media calling on Canada to formally recognize a Palestinian state. Mississauga Centre MP Fares Al Soud also expressed support, saying justice for Palestinians “demands recognition.”
Last fall, dozens of MPs from the Liberal, NDP, Bloc Québécois, and Green parties joined an international appeal advocating for Palestinian statehood.
For decades, Canada has supported the eventual creation of a Palestinian state that would exist peacefully alongside Israel.
