Canada Post has issued a new commemorative stamp to recognize the long history of Sikh soldiers who have served in the Canadian military. The stamp was unveiled this past weekend at the annual Sikh Remembrance Day ceremony in Kitchener, Ontario.

The stamp aims to honour the contributions of Sikh soldiers, a history that includes service in conflicts across the globe.

Historians note that approximately 250,000 Sikh soldiers fought alongside Britain and its allies in both World Wars. However, due to discrimination in Canada, many Sikhs were prevented from enlisting in the Canadian military.

Canada Post noted in a press release that in the First World War, only 10 individuals were able to overcome these barriers. Most of them fought with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Europe, with eight enlisting before conscription.

The Crown corporation added that nearly a century later, research has brought forth the “forgotten stories of these and other Sikh soldiers in Canada, whose courage inspired future generations and helped build a more inclusive country.”

The stamp serves as a permanent tribute to these soldiers and their legacy of courage and contribution to the nation’s military history.
