Canada officially recognized the state of Palestine yesterday. According to a statement released by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office on Sunday morning, this action was taken in partnership with international allies to preserve the possibility of a “two-state solution.”

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated, “For many decades, Canada’s commitment to a two-state solution was based on the expectation that this outcome would eventually be achieved as part of a negotiated settlement.”

However, this possibility “has been steadily and gravely eroded” by several events, including the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel, the Israeli parliament’s resolution supporting the annexation of the occupied West Bank, and the Israeli government’s restrictions on humanitarian aid.

The PMO’s statement added, “Hamas has terrorized the people of Israel and oppressed the people of Gaza, causing horrific suffering. Hamas has stolen the life and liberty of the Palestinian people and can in no way dictate their future.”

The PMO further stated that Canada is offering its partnership to “fulfill the promise of a peaceful future for both the Palestinian state and Israel.”
