Canada has paused parents and grandparents program intake until further notice

January 7,2026

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued new Ministerial Instructions — MI89 — that took effect on January 1, 2026, authorizing the department to process up to 10,000 applications from the 2025 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) intake during the 2026 calendar year.

Under the instructions, IRCC will not accept any new PGP sponsorship or permanent residence applications as of January 1, 2026, until further notice. The department says the pause is administrative and intended to help clear the existing backlog.

IRCC emphasized that the program is not being cancelled. A future intake will be announced once the department is prepared to reopen submissions.
