Canada has signed a critical minerals partnership with Germany to promote the joint public financing of natural resources projects, as Ottawa seeks to boost development and exports to Europe.
According to Prime Minister Mark Carney, key Canadian minerals like nickel and cobalt have been underdeveloped for too long, while China and Russia dominate the global market. He noted that Germany has become a leader in Europe in its efforts to diversify away from these countries. “Canada can play a role in accelerating that diversification for Germany, and for Europe,” Carney said.
He added that the demand for critical minerals is expected to quadruple over the next decade, making these issues increasingly important. During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Carney also said the two nations aim to cooperate closely on energy, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen energy.
The document is not legally or financially binding on Canada; it is designed to encourage new cooperative efforts. Carney said there is a “huge range of immediate opportunities” in critical minerals and LNG.
The Prime Minister stated that Ottawa plans to formally announce new investments in port infrastructure within the next two weeks, pointing to upgrades at ports in Montreal and Churchill, Man. that will help with the export of energy and mineral products.
