Canada is contributing an additional $30 million in humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, along with $10 million to support reforms within the Palestinian Authority in preparation for future statehood.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced the funding today at a major United Nations conference in New York focused on preserving the two-state solution.
The conference comes amid growing warnings from global experts about the risk of starvation in Gaza, where Israel has recently eased some restrictions on aid deliveries.
Anand stated that the $30 million will reach Gaza “as soon as logistically possible” and called for a ceasefire to support the path to peace.
Unlike France, Canada has not committed to recognizing a Palestinian state at this time. Instead, it emphasizes that the Palestinian Authority must implement broad reforms to effectively govern both Gaza and the West Bank.
Ottawa’s $10 million pledge is aimed at helping the Authority establish legitimate, democratic governance.
