California plans to revoke 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses issued to immigrants after determining that the expiration dates extended beyond the period the drivers were legally permitted to remain in the United States, state officials said Wednesday.

The announcement comes amid strong criticism from the Trump administration over California and other states issuing licenses to people living in the country without legal status. The issue gained national attention in August after a tractor-trailer driver who was not authorized to be in the U.S. made an illegal U-turn in Florida, causing a crash that killed three people.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said California’s decision to rescind the licenses shows the state acted improperly, despite previously defending its licensing practices. California began reviewing the licenses after Duffy raised concerns.

“After weeks of insisting they had done nothing wrong, Gavin Newsom and California have been caught red-handed. Now that we’ve exposed the truth, 17,000 improperly issued trucking licenses are being revoked,” Duffy said, referring to the governor. “This is just the beginning. My team will continue to make sure California removes every illegal immigrant from behind the wheel of semitrucks and school buses.”
