Following the resignation of Steven Guilbeault, Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to reshuffle his cabinet today.

Guilbeault resigned from his roles as Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and as Quebec Lieutenant on Thursday, just hours after the federal government announced an energy deal with Alberta.

In his resignation letter, Guilbeault stated that while he understands the Prime Minister’s efforts in the face of “deep turmoil,” he belongs to those for whom environmental issues must remain “front and centre.”

“That is why I strongly oppose the MoU struck between the federal government and the government of Alberta,” he said, noting that he made the decision “with great sadness.”

Government sources indicate that the shuffle will be minor, aimed primarily at covering the various portfolios previously held by Guilbeault.

The Prime Minister’s Office has advised that a swearing-in ceremony will take place this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Rideau Hall.
