The BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) intensified its job action Friday, announcing an overtime ban for its members at the province’s four main liquor distribution centers.
The affected warehouses are located in Burnaby, Delta, Richmond, and Kamloops. These key facilities are responsible for distributing beer, wine, and spirits to liquor stores and commercial customers such as bars, pubs, and restaurants.
BCGEU President Paul Finch stated, “When the government relies on their labor to generate record liquor revenues, public service employees shouldn’t have to bear the burden of the inflation crisis.” He added, “If the government won’t treat employees fairly, they shouldn’t expect business as usual.”
The overtime ban is the latest move in a dispute that now involves over 6,000 union members.
Previous actions have included picket lines at government offices and other locations across the province, including in Victoria, Surrey, Prince George, Kamloops, and Kelowna.
The union is demanding an 8.25% wage increase over two years, along with cost-of-living protections and the right to work remotely. The BCGEU has stated that the province’s last offer was roughly half of what the union is seeking.
