British Columbia Premier David Eby says the upcoming 50% U.S. tariff on certain copper products underscores the necessity for diversified markets.

The Canadian economy is already reeling from tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. President Trump has signed executive orders for a 50% tariff on semi-finished copper products, set to begin tomorrow.

If a trade deal isn’t reached between the two countries by then, a 35% tariff could also be applied to goods falling outside the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Despite this, Prime Minister Mark Carney has described the ongoing negotiations as complex, comprehensive, and constructive.

Eby stated that the incoming 50% American tariff on some copper products will affect provinces differently. He noted that most of B.C.’s copper is exported to Asia, which helps insulate the province from the tariff’s impact. However, he emphasized that this situation highlights the crucial need for diversified markets.

According to Natural Resources Canada, B.C. accounts for approximately 46% of Canada’s mined copper production.
