British Columbia Premier David Eby is calling for the federal government to either cancel or significantly reform the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. He is also blaming Ottawa’s immigration policies for straining the province’s shelters and food banks.
Speaking in Surrey, Eby stated, “The temporary foreign worker program is not working. It should be scrapped or it should be significantly reformed.”
He added, “We cannot have an immigration system that fills our homeless shelters and our food banks. We cannot have an immigration system that exceeds our capacity to build schools and homes. And we cannot have an immigration program that increases unemployment among our young people.”
Eby’s comments mark a rare alignment with federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who had also called for an end to the program on Wednesday. Poilievre has previously blamed temporary foreign workers for “pushing Canadian youth out of jobs.”
