BC Highway Patrol successfully removed 626 impaired drivers from the roads during its summer campaign, which ran from June 15 to August 31, 2025.

The campaign’s results highlight that impaired driving is a persistent problem across the province, with a particularly high concentration in Northern and Central BC. Despite having a lower population, Northern BC saw the highest number of driving prohibitions, criminal charges, and drug prohibitions.

A regional breakdown shows the highest numbers in Metro Vancouver, Sea to Sky, and the Eastern Fraser Valley, with 150 drivers caught. Northern BC followed with 146 drivers, of whom 11 were impaired by drugs. Vancouver Island had 131 impaired drivers, with 15 being drug-impaired. In Central BC, authorities caught 111 drivers, while the Kootenay region accounted for 88 impaired drivers, noting a particularly high number of drug-impaired cases at 31.

Superintendent Mike Coyle stated, “Drug-impaired driving is a specific issue, particularly in the Kootenays, although it is a growing problem everywhere, leading to serious and fatal collisions. We need people, especially in BC’s rural areas, to be more serious about being vigilant.”
