No matter the occasion, losing your vehicle is bad — but losing your life is worse. That’s why a BC Highway Patrol officer impounded 14 vehicles for excessive speeding on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) on Christmas Day.

The Sea to Sky route has become notorious for speeding, and BC Highway Patrol regularly deals with the serious and sometimes fatal crashes that result.

“Some people may think police are being harsh,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol. “But it’s our job to save lives — yours, your loved ones’, and everyone else on the road. Driving 40 km/h over the speed limit can be deadly, and physics doesn’t take holidays.”

Every driver who had their vehicle impounded that day was travelling at least 40 km/h over the limit. Two were clocked at 145 and 147 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.

“As we head into the New Year, drivers need to remember that impaired driving also doesn’t get a holiday,” McLaughlin added. “We want everyone to make it home safely — but if you choose to break traffic laws, expect to find another ride.”
